Water in your basement? What to do in the first 24 hours.

By the team at Brian’s Professional  ·  Nazareth, PA

Whether it comes from a burst pipe, a failed water heater or a heavy storm, water in your home is stressful. What happens in the first day makes a real difference in how much can be saved, so here is where to start.

1. Make it safe

  • If water is near outlets, cords or the electrical panel, stay out and call your utility or an electrician first.
  • Shut off the water at the main valve if the source is a pipe or appliance.
  • Watch for slippery floors and sagging ceilings.

2. Document everything

Before you move anything, take photos and video of the water, the source and anything damaged. Your insurance company will want to see it.

3. Move what you can

  • Lift furniture off wet carpet and put foil or wood blocks under the legs.
  • Move rugs, papers, photos and electronics to a dry area.
  • Open windows if the weather allows, and run fans to keep air moving.

4. Don’t wait on the drying

Carpet pad, drywall and subfloors can hold moisture long after the surface feels dry. Professional drying equipment and moisture readings help make sure nothing is left behind to cause problems later.

5. Call a team you can trust

Kona’s Pet Accident Tips: What to Do When Your Pet Pees on the Carpet

Because accidents happen—even to the best dogs! 🐾
Presented by Brian’s Professional Cleaning & Restoration Co., Inc.

Hi, friends! Kona here! 🐶

I have a little confession to make.

Sometimes, even the sweetest, most lovable, absolutely adorable dogs (like me!) have accidents.

Maybe we got a little too excited. Maybe nobody noticed us standing by the door. Or maybe we just couldn’t hold it any longer.

Whatever the reason, when a pet pees on your carpet, what you do in the first few minutes can make a BIG difference.

Fortunately, my friends at Brian’s Professional Cleaning & Restoration know a thing or two about keeping carpets clean, fresh, and smelling great.

So, let’s talk about what to do when your furry friend leaves behind an unexpected surprise!

🐾 Tip #1: Act Fast! Don’t Let It Soak In.

The sooner you address a pet accident, the better your chances of preventing permanent odors and stains.

Pet urine doesn’t just sit on the surface of your carpet. It can soak through the carpet fibers, into the backing, and sometimes even reach the padding underneath.

And that’s where things can get really stinky!

Here’s what to do:

  • Grab some clean, white paper towels or absorbent cloths.
  • Gently blot the wet area to absorb as much urine as possible.
  • Apply firm pressure without rubbing or scrubbing.
  • Replace the towels and repeat until you’re no longer absorbing moisture.

Kona’s Pro Tip: Don’t rub the carpet! Scrubbing can spread the urine and damage carpet fibers. Blotting is your best friend.

🐾 Tip #2: Skip the Household Cleaning Experiments

We know it’s tempting to grab whatever cleaning product is under the kitchen sink.

But not every cleaner is safe or effective for pet urine.

Some household cleaning products can discolor carpeting, leave behind sticky residues, or make odors more difficult to eliminate.

And please, never use ammonia-based cleaners on pet urine stains.

Ammonia can contribute to odors that resemble urine, potentially encouraging some pets to return to the same spot.

Also, never mix cleaning chemicals, especially bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.

Kona’s Pro Tip: Choose a carpet-safe enzymatic cleaner specifically formulated for pet urine. These products are designed to break down urine-related residues rather than simply cover up odors.

Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and test the product in an inconspicuous area first.

🐾 Tip #3: That Smell Might Be Hiding!

Here’s something many homeowners don’t realize.

Just because you can’t see the accident anymore doesn’t mean it’s gone.

Pet urine can travel deeper into the carpet than you might expect.

Even after the surface looks clean, urine residue can remain in the carpet backing or padding.

As moisture and humidity change, those unpleasant odors can return.

That’s why spraying a little air freshener or carpet deodorizer isn’t always enough.

You’re not eliminating the problem. You’re just temporarily covering it up.

Kona’s Pro Tip: If the same area keeps smelling bad, even after you’ve cleaned it, there may be contamination below the carpet’s surface.

That’s when it’s time to call the professionals!

🐾 Tip #4: Be Careful With Rental Carpet Cleaners

Renting a carpet cleaning machine might seem like the perfect solution.

And sometimes, for ordinary dirt and routine cleaning, these machines can be helpful.

But pet urine is a different challenge.

Using too much water or cleaning solution can spread contamination deeper into the carpet or padding.

And if the carpet isn’t thoroughly extracted and dried, you could end up with additional problems.

Professional carpet cleaning equipment and appropriate treatment methods can help address contamination more effectively.

Kona’s Pro Tip: More water doesn’t mean cleaner carpet! Proper extraction and drying are just as important as the cleaning solution.

🐾 Tip #5: Know When to Call Brian’s Professional

Sometimes a small, fresh accident can be handled successfully at home.

But other situations require a little more attention.

Consider professional cleaning when:

  • The same area has been repeatedly soiled.
  • Odors return after cleaning.
  • You discover an old or dried urine stain.
  • Your pet has had multiple accidents throughout the house.
  • Urine has reached the carpet padding or subfloor.
  • Store-bought products just aren’t getting the job done.

At Brian’s Professional Cleaning & Restoration Co., Inc., we understand that pets are part of the family.

Our goal is to help homeowners address carpet stains and odors using appropriate professional cleaning methods.

Depending on the severity of the contamination, additional treatment or replacement of affected materials may be necessary.

🐾 Bonus Tip: Don’t Blame Your Best Friend!

Okay, this one is especially important to me.

Accidents happen.

Dogs get excited. Puppies are learning. Older pets sometimes have trouble holding it. And occasionally, medical or behavioral issues can cause unexpected accidents.

Punishing a pet after discovering an accident won’t help them understand what happened.

Instead, focus on cleaning the area properly and figuring out why the accident occurred.

If your pet suddenly starts having accidents or is urinating more frequently, a visit to the veterinarian is a good idea.

Kona’s Pro Tip: A little patience, a consistent bathroom routine, and lots of positive reinforcement go a long way!

And maybe an extra treat.

Just saying. 🦴

A Final Word From Kona 🐶

Look, nobody’s perfect.

Not even me.

And I’m pretty darn close.

But when accidents happen, knowing how to respond can save your carpets, prevent lingering odors, and help keep your home comfortable for everyone—two-legged and four-legged family members alike.

Remember: Blot quickly. Use the right products. Avoid soaking the carpet. And know when to call for help.

That’s all for today’s lesson!

Until next time, keep those tails wagging and those carpets clean!

Love,

Kona 🐾
